Boonex Dolphin has been around for some time. We have been a part of the Dolphin platform from version 5.6.x. Currently the latest release is 7.0.8, while Dolphin 8 is being built. There have been quite few ups and downs on this application. The developers are from Kyrgyzstan, and sometimes they have a different understanding of what a social network actually is.
Dolphin actually started out as a dating platform, and from many complaints from those of us who were using the platform, they have slowly, and I mean slowly ascended to the more typical social networking medium. There are still quite a few issues, however, for the overall of what it provides, there is nothing on the market that is currently open-source, nor as feature rich as Dolphin.
Dolphin does not come without its costs, from the onset, you look at the boonex site, and you see offers of hosting the application for what would appear to be extremely affordable, under the five dollar range. Then the headache starts. Dolphin is an extremely resource intensive application, from version 7, and does not really run well on shared Hosting, some say they have ran it on shared hosting and have had no problems, others however, have experienced the total opposite effect, having their hosting accounts shut off, and told they would need to upgrade to VPS, otherwise the site could not be hosted on the shared environment.
What we will do here, is continue to provide constructive feedback on this application. We have enjoyed dolphin, and continue to prosper from it today. Though not exactly what is advertised on the leading page of the developers site, and can in fact become a money pit very quickly.
We do believe in Dolphin, and we know it has grown exponentially.
